How It Works

Gravel need depends on your tank's footprint, not its gallon rating: the bottom area times your desired depth gives the volume. This calculator adds gravel-specific detail on top of the basic substrate math —depth recommendations by setup, and per-type bulk densities for fine gravel, pea gravel, and coarse gravel, so the weight estimate matches what you will actually carry home.

Gravel Volume = Length × Width × Desired Depth

Estimated Weight = Gravel Volume × Gravel Density

Example

A standard 55 gallon (48 × 13 inches) with 2 inches of pea gravel: 48 × 13 × 2 = 1,248 cubic inches = 20.4 liters. At 1.55 kg/L, that is about 31.7 kg —roughly 70 pounds of pea gravel, or about three 25 lb bags.

Important Limitations

  • Weight is an estimate; actual density varies by brand, grain size, and moisture.
  • Deeper beds or slopes toward the back use noticeably more gravel than a flat bed.
  • Rinsed gravel retains some water —expect the wet weight in the tank to run a little higher.

FAQ

How much gravel do I need for my fish tank?

Measure your tank's length and width, decide on a depth, and multiply: Length × Width × Depth. A 48 × 12 inch tank with 2 inches of gravel needs about 1,152 cubic inches —roughly 18.9 liters, or about 29 kg (65 lb) of pea gravel.

How deep should aquarium gravel be?

For most tanks, 1— inches is plenty. Use closer to 2— inches in planted tanks so root-feeding plants can anchor, and shallower (1 inch) if you plan to keep the bed easy to vacuum.

How many pounds of gravel per gallon?

The old rule of 1 pound per gallon is a rough shortcut and often wrong for long, shallow tanks. Gravel need depends on the tank's footprint, not its water volume —always calculate by area × depth.

Does gravel type change how much I need?

The volume you need is the same, but the weight changes. Pea gravel is around 1.55 kg per liter, fine gravel about 1.6, and coarse gravel about 1.5 —so the same volume of fine gravel weighs slightly more.

Is gravel weight from this calculator exact?

It is a planning estimate. Bulk density varies by brand and moisture, and rinsed gravel can hold water that adds weight. Buy slightly more than calculated —leftover gravel is useful for topping up.

Should I rinse gravel before adding it to the tank?

Yes. Rinse gravel in a colander or bucket until the water runs mostly clear to remove fine dust that would otherwise cloud the tank and stress filters.
