How It Works

The calculator adds five components. Water weight comes from the tank's volume at your fill level (fresh water ≈1 kg per liter). Glass weight comes from the total panel area × thickness × glass density (2.5 g/cm³), assuming an open-top rectangular tank. Substrate weight uses the same math as the Substrate Calculator, and —importantly —the substrate displaces water, so the water weight is reduced accordingly. Finally, your decor and equipment entry covers rocks, driftwood, filter, heater, and lights. Remember that the stand and cabinet add their own weight on top.

Water Weight = (Tank Volume × Fill % −Substrate Volume) × 1 kg/L

Glass Weight = Panel Area × Thickness × 2.5 g/cm³

Substrate Weight = Length × Width × Depth × Density

Example

A standard 55 gallon (48 × 13 × 21 in) filled to 95% with a 2 inch gravel bed and 20 lb of rock and equipment: water ≈460 lb, glass ≈75 lb, gravel ≈71 lb, decor ≈20 lb — roughly 625 lb before the stand. Place it on a proper stand near a bearing wall.

Important Limitations

  • Glass weight assumes an open-top rectangular tank and ignores braces, trim, and rims.
  • Fresh water density is assumed (1 kg/L); saltwater is 2—% heavier.
  • The stand/cabinet weight is not included —add it separately for floor-load planning.
  • If the result matters structurally (upper floors, old buildings), consult a professional.

FAQ

How much does a fish tank weigh?

Water weighs about 8.34 lb per US gallon (1 kg per liter), so a filled 20 gallon tank already carries around 167 lb of water alone —before the glass, substrate, rocks, and stand. Most mid-size tanks weigh several hundred pounds when set up.

How do I calculate the weight of my aquarium?

Add up five components: water (volume × 8.34 lb per gallon), glass (panel area × thickness × glass density), substrate (volume × density), decor and equipment, and the stand itself. The calculator above does all of this from your tank's dimensions.

Can my floor support a large aquarium?

Most modern residential floors handle a properly positioned 55–5 gallon tank, but placement matters: set the tank perpendicular to floor joists, near a bearing wall, and always on a level, dedicated stand. For tanks over ~125 gallons, or older floors, consult a structural professional.

Does substrate weight really matter?

Yes —a 2 inch gravel bed in a 55 gallon tank adds roughly 70 lb. Substrate also displaces water, which this calculator accounts for so you do not double count.

Is saltwater heavier than freshwater?

Slightly. Saltwater is about 2—% denser than freshwater. This calculator assumes freshwater; add roughly 2—% to the water weight for marine setups.

How much does the glass itself weigh?

Glass density is about 2.5 g/cm³. A 55 gallon tank's glass typically weighs 60–0 lb depending on thickness. This calculator estimates it from your dimensions and the thickness you enter.
